How many businesses in the Rockhampton region have looked at  last years
sales figures for this equivalent week and scratched their heads
wondering what happened to get such a spike. This week last year was the
lead  into Beef Week. People from all over were coming into the region,
filling  hotels and motels, frequenting restaurants, spending money
with retailers. To  have this happening again each year would be
enormously desirable for local  businesses. Logistics, planning and
losing attendance and sponsor appeal from occurring  too often means
this won’t happen. However Rockhampton could host other major  events.
Major events enhance Rockhampton as a service centre and helps local
businesses, particularly retailers, collect some of the dollars being
spent  online. Cost to host major events is a major hurdle and then
there’s the  project management involved. Of course no event can be
assured of success  either, financial and/or attendance. If however you
were a business and given  the chance to get a Beef Week like spike in
sales for an outlay of $250 would  you do it? The Council obviously
can’t keep coming up with the money to help  major events to occur. Can
business fill this void and maybe then some? If each  business in the
Rockhampton region contributed $250 each to a major event fund it
should raise over a half a million dollars. Imagine if this fund was put
to  hosting a major masters sporting event promoted Australia wide.
Swimming,  tennis, hockey, basketball, football, rowing, etc., all held
within the same 7  day period. Making use of the fantastic sporting
facilities Rockhampton region  has and if held around now our beautiful
climate. What a positive image the  Rockhampton region could project
nationally. What a revenue boost it would  provide to the economy. This
is just one option for a major event. If you run a  business take a look
at last year’s sales figures and consider if $250 would be  an
investment you would make. It could happen if enough people want it to.
The  future is what you create, not just what you hope to see.
