$3.2 billion spent in Queensland last year. Did you read the 3 page
spread in Saturdays Morning Bulletin about the cashed up grey nomad army
driving their RV and caravans around Queensland.  “Voting with their
feet by avoiding the areas that are least hospitable and the 60,000
members of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) are
preparing their own map of motor-home friendly towns.” I’ve wrote about
this over the last 2 years and was curious if any towns in the
Rockhampton Region were now included on the CMCA list of RV friendly
towns, however as before, no. I can only assume Council see no benefit
getting a bigger share of the $3.2 billion dollars being spent by these
‘new gypsies’. Forty seven other towns in Queensland are listed as RV
friendly and I assume therefore included on the CMCA maps of places to
visit. Not included I also assume means a town to avoid.  Why do Council
and, from previous comments I’ve read, Capricorn Enterprise choose not
to seek RV friendly town status? There must be reasons why a region
wanting more money spent in its economy chooses to ignore an
organisation of 60,000 members and arguably by extension a large share
of the 80,000 grey nomads who last year spent $3.2 billion dollars in
Queensland alone. I would like to hear the reasons and I assume so would
a lot of local businesses. After all as the population ages this market
will only get bigger. Imagine the impact of making The Caves showground
an RV friendly destination for 51 weeks a year would have on the
township. Mount Morgan with its rich history would appear to make
another ideal location for grey nomads following their ancestral trail.
What impact could RV friendly destination status have on the Heritage
Village; could it profitably be providing meals and entertainment
regularly at the Shearing Shed? The Rockhampton Showgrounds as a
location would arguably be fantastic for the near-by Wandal businesses.
To the people paid to encourage growth in the region please tell us why
we don’t have any RV friendly towns in our region?
