We hear how January 1st will be a new start for Livingstone Shire Council; it is also for the Rockhampton Region. Bit smaller in size with bigger challenges; but it is the start of a new chapter, one Rockhampton region residents should look towards with optimism. I attended a Grade 12 graduation last week. A morning of mixed emotions; excitement for what lies ahead, sadness’s for what one is leaving. The message to the students, “wear sunscreen”. Sunscreen, you may be thinking to a bunch of 17 year olds embarking on Schoolies wear condom’s would be more appropriate however watch the YouTube video ‘Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen’ you’ll appreciate the timeliness of the message as these young adults set out on the next chapter in their life. In a way that’s what Rockhampton and Livingstone are about to go through. Nearly 6 years together, from January 1st both are to start their separate journeys. Livingstone, more so Yeppoon, appears most excited about this. We should all however be excited as well as sad, optimistic as well as nervous. Along with the challenges change provides comes opportunities. The sum of the parts can be greater than the whole. While a complete about-face this is the belief we now need to have and pursue in order for both Councils to succeed. Residents let’s greet this new chapter with the fervour of a Grade 12 student. Have our own ‘Resies’ with both Councils co-hosting New Year parties at major points where the Councils share boundaries, like at Nerimbera, Ramsay Creek and even at the go-kart track on Yeppoon Road. Reminisce, celebrate the New Year and the change it brings as well as acknowledge we now blaze separate paths; they may cross at times and at other times run parallel but not merging. Blaze a path and not follow a trail; as from January 1st it is a new start for both Councils and the residents within. Being new, to succeed paths need to be blazed, obstacles overcome, challenges met and tough decisions made. Though it may appear a little bleak to some now doesn’t mean with strong conviction Livingstone and Rockhampton can’t both be headed for sunshine. So we all should ‘wear sunscreen’.
