Rockhampton and Livingstone, which one would you buy coffee from and what aroma would they exude? It was an interesting analogy that Mayor Strelow used to describe the relationship between the 2 councils. Together the 2 attract more people, but compete for their share of them. Mayor Strelow pointed out that Rockhampton needs to have continual strong growth. This growth reflected by the people choosing to live in Rockhampton, not Livingstone. The things that affect which coffee shop, that may only be metres apart , you frequent are similar to where one decides to live. The cost, convenience, ambience, attitude, taste, facilities, reputation, image can all affect where you buy your coffee and where you live. Livingstone, particularly the Capricorn Coast may arguably have a more immediate appeal as a place to live. After all there’s the beaches and islands as well as most of the facilities Rockhampton offers, and for the ones it doesn’t; Art Gallery, Pilbeam Theatre, Cinema, Botanic Gardens, etc., well they’re only half an hour away. How does Rockhampton Region compete to get the share of the regions new residents it needs to deliver the population targets that the Queensland plan is seeking? High rise apartments along the river bank is one way. Beautification of natural assets like the river and Mt. Archer will enhance the liveability appeal. However can more be done in attracting the tree change market. There has been talk for years of Mt. Morgan becoming the Montville of the region. However what about somewhere a little closer without such a gradient. Bouldercombe already has a relaxed village appeal to it. Acreages, shop, pub, an active Progress Association combined with natural beauty could make Bouldercombe a very desirable tree change destination. A destination to compliment and compete with Livingstone’s Byfield, The Caves, Cawarral, in attracting tree changers to the region. It however needs to develop the desired image to gain a stronger identity. Montville has developed an image as a beautiful place to live, visit, start a business despite not being right on the coast. With the improvements to the southern highway, a community consulted plan and some strategic Bouldercombe branding there may be another coffee choice; the Bouldercombe Brew, offering a earthy caramel aroma.
