Watching the latest Star Trek movie on Sunday night I recalled how the original TV series was nearly canned during its second season in 1967, but through public support it was granted another season and the rest is history (though not all of it triumphant). It might be a point of reference for our National Premier League team; CQ Energy stripped of its licence to play in the state-wide football (soccer) competition and now seeking public support to help get a Central Queensland licence re-instated. Of course to save a cause you don’t now write letters and phone the TV network (or in this case Football Queensland); a Facebook page, ‘Save CQ NPL team’ is constructed and you Like it. This CQ Energy player initiative needs to be both applauded and supported. Last check of the Facebook page indicated 832 likes. Despite the pleas on the media to ‘like’ the page’, a sport with a junior player base in CQ of around 4500 players I’m a bit surprised it has only mustered 832 likes. Whether you’re interested in football (soccer) or not we should indicate an interest in the regions kids, representative teams and lifestyle options. Not knowing the details I suspect there is some separation between the Energy and the clubs that make up the local competitions for there to be only 832 likes. Sport is important to all communities. By providing a local pathway to play at higher level there are less reasons for families to move south to help their children access the qualified coaching and higher competition. Local clubs may feel threatened by the formation of a separate representative club attracting their best talent, but shouldn’t the first goal of all clubs be the development of its players, winning premiership’s second. It is a huge commitment players (and parents) make to be in representative teams; to have the rug pulled from under their feet during the season must be gut wrenching. Hopefully for a sport that refers to itself as the world game can find a way to see it develop further in CQ. And if we can help by ‘liking’ the Facebook page then let’s do it. Beam a CQ NPL team up in the competition Scottie.
