With the imminent official opening of the south side pool (Rockhampton’s 2nd World War Memorial Aquatic Centre) an opportunity exists to highlight all the activities within the Victoria Park precinct and further tackle Rockhampton’s obesity image; a unique multi sport challenge. Like the successful Rocky River Run the sporting challenge should involve fun and serious competitors, the more the better. Variations of starting times and distance could make the first run (walk) leg more manageable as entrants enter the pool for a 50 or 25 metre swim, then run to the tennis centre and serve 5 tennis balls, over to the basketball courts to dribble a ball down the court and shoot a basket, onwards to the bowling green to place a bowl within 30 cm of the jack, then to the gymnastic and trampoline club to do 10 star jumps on a trampoline, across to the cricket field to bowl a cricket ball at the wickets, down to the rugby league fields to convert a goal signifying the end of the challenge. This does not include the Bridge Club, kid’s playground and Skate Park or utilising the near-by Showgrounds or Rockhampton High School which could add more components (and age groups) to the challenge. What the sport challenge highlights is the fantastic precinct Victoria Park is for the city and region, not just the sporting facilities but its natural beauty beside the river. A unique sporting challenge like this becomes a marketing tool to sell the lifestyle of Rockhampton to attract people to live and invest here, tackle the obesity image and generally make people more aware of what’s within Victoria Park. A brochure of Victoria Park needs to be produced, have it available at nearby motels, etc.,  as people who come to Rockhampton for short term work projects want to know where they can go for a swim, play some social tennis or basketball, even bridge; and of regular events like Hand Made Markets at the Showgrounds. The redeveloped south side pool is just the trigger for Victoria Park (maybe it should be renamed Rockhampton Park) to become a brand that’s associated with activity, beauty and community; a brand helping sell Rockhampton as a vibrant place to live and invest.
