One TV commercial says I’m living in a state where 1,100 jobs are being created every month. A few minutes later, another indicates youth unemployment is 20%, then another just straight out says the current state Government is lying about their record on jobs. For a television commercial to be broadcast, it must be approved by ‘Commercials Acceptance Division’ and obtain a ‘CAD’ number. The process requires substantiation of any claims made in the commercial. So, we can assume each of these advertisers can substantiate their job (or lack of) claims. As they say there are lies; damn lies than statistics. A CAD (capable of disguising ones true characteristics) number therefore seems rather appropriate.  Job creation and youth unemployment are major issues in this state election – as they should be. Both major parties will be promising to put millions into training programs and offering employer incentives, despite the huge debt. Trouble is, businesses need growth and the willingness to employ staff. Waving $6,000 to put on someone who will cost at least $20,000 won’t work, unless that business can get a positive return from the $14,000 difference in the first year and more in following years. Then some small businesses just don’t want to employ, no matter what.  How does Government stimulate growth? Building massive infrastructure projects is one way, but once completed what next? Bechtel in Gladstone a case in point. And, of course, how is it going to be paid for? More debt – asset sales! Assisting the development of an environment conducive to sustainable small business’ growth is an absolutely necessary long term strategy. Not the attention (vote) grabbing headlines of a new northern highway access being constructed, but enabling all communities to achieve organic economic and job growth from buying local initiatives, educating businesses on working smarter  and attracting suitable employees, collaborative action, etc. Strategies that communities could actually implement ourselves. Instead of expecting government (no matter which party) to solve all the problems and being forever disappointed, we need to ask and do what we can for our region, our state. Our future is determined by more by what we do, rather than what government does.
