As adults we don’t encourage kids to dream big, afraid that if they don’t realise their lofty goals they’ll live with constant disappointment. I wonder as a 6 year old running around Mount Morgan what dreams Stephen Moore had, could they be as big as what is to happen this Sunday morning. 2.00am this Sunday Australia play New Zealand in the Rugby Union World Cup final and leading the Wallabies on the field will be Stephen Moore, the same Stephen Moore that once played for the Mt. Morgan under 8’s. What if he was not encouraged to pursue his rugby union dreams! Australia goes in as underdogs, but Coach Michael Cheika appears to have instilled a ‘believe’ mind-set within the team that is spreading to the fans. Do we as adults also quash big dreams for our region by such statements as that will never happen here, where’s the money going to come from, be a realist. I believe our region can be more; more buoyant, more vibrant and more forward positive thinking. Obviously it’s quieter than it was during the boom mining period, but one of the factors why is the eagerness to knock those that dare dream for greater things. Not all dreams will be realised and maybe the region can do without some of them being achieved, but an environment that encourages its residents to dream big is better than not dream at all. One way to enhance this environment is visibly acknowledge our local nurtured champions, be they from sporting, cultural, medical or business field. Like the young kid that swam laps in the South Rockhampton pool who wrote he was going to win an Olympic gold medal and in 1988 ranked 46th in the world did in the 200 metre final. Wouldn’t it be good if everyone in the region knew who I am referring to because they see his image regularly alongside the many other locally born and or nurtured champions that realise their big dreams. It would be an inspiration for the local youth and economy. We can be Moore if we Believe. Fingers crossed after this Sunday the latest addition to this honour roll will have world champion under his name, go the Wallabies.
