So the only thing building on Great Keppel Island is frustration, even the goats are locking horns. I’m not going to defend Tower Holdings, but I imagine they find it frustrating too. What I find disappointing is knocking the efforts of OKOF (Our Keppel Our Future), local people spending their resources in trying to get the State Government to grant a boutique casino licence (BCL) for GKI Resort. Disagree but don’t knock people for having a different opinion. I’m not a member, but I do support their effort to help yield the indicated 1500 jobs. Is the touted international resort a mere money making ploy by the developer, too ambitious to ever get funded or a diligence less dream that is seemingly going bad; who really knows? However if there is any chance it could be realised giving local youth employment opportunities and be the trigger to make this region an international tourist destination, isn’t it better to try make it happen rather than knock it? What is the alternative? No one else to my knowledge has indicated they are willing to put up their money to develop anything on the island that creates substantial employment opportunities. Tower haven’t walked away, presently they are the only prospect. This region can be up there with the Gold Coast and Cairns in national and international appeal, but more of us need to believe it is possible. The OKOF members appear to, why knock them for that. Youth unemployment in our region is higher than the national average. Will knocking the resort development decrease that or helping get it over the line? If Tower walk away leaving the old resort in its present condition, or they get the BCL and sell it; knock them. But what if they do get the BCL, they do build an eco-friendly resort, they do use local businesses for supplies,1500 locals get jobs, international tourists increase 40 fold, property values on the Capricorn Coast increase, other developments in the region materialise; is that a dream worthy of supporting, even if the odds appear stacked against it. I can better justify that to my kids than telling them projects like GKI Resort never happen in our region; mediocrity is our ceiling.
