Would a 1% improvement in an athlete performance be noticeable?
Possibly not; what if it was 1% improvement in each of 10 different parts that affect their performance.
Wouldn’t that be easier and more effective for the athlete to achieve than striving for a 10% improvement in just one area?
Could we apply this concept of improving different parts by just 1% to business, in the job we perform, in applying for a position, in the way we live our lives?
Could we apply this to the region we live in, Central Queensland?
Most will possibly agree the CQ economy could be better. But most either don’t know what to change to make it better, or will wait for someone else to do something, think it’s too hard, or believe if they wait long enough it will just happen.
With the likely election result we can pretty much expect federal parliament not to do anything significant for the next 3 years.
Be the change you want Central Queensland to be.
Apologies to Mahatma Gandhi for this variation of his famous quote, but it may be quite apt if we want to see an improvement within the next 3 years.
What do we want to change?
Happiness and health are arguably life’s two most important goal posts.
Increasing job opportunities, having a safe environment to raise a family, offering more entertainment options, a clean environment, and a giving caring community are all parts that go towards an individual’s and community happiness, health and improving standard of living.
Can we as individuals put a bigger effort into these characteristics to create a positive change, even to make just a 1% improvement?
- 1% more of your discretionary spend done at a local business than on an international website.
- Local businesses spending 1% more with local suppliers than those outside the region.
- 1% more of our social media time positively selling our region.
- Employment agencies setting a 1% higher target to get small local businesses to take advantage of the government incentives to put on a new team member.
- 1% increase in the amount we donate to local charities.
- 1% extra effort in improving our recycling efforts.
- 1% increase in the number of Neighbourhood Watch homes.
- 1% increase each week in the amount of exercise we do.
- 1% increase in the annual leave spent exploring CQ as opposed to other regions.
- 1% increase in the time we spend with our neighbours.
Would 235000 people making 1% improvements in each of these activities cause positive change in CQ?
Of course it would. Not just by 1%, the extra money circulating would create more jobs, charities would be able to help more local people. Hospitals, medical and mental health care costs would drop, crime rates possibly also.
The multiplier effect from all this may result in above average economic growth. And not one bit requires any additional action from any level of government.
We make the change; we be the change we want CQ to be.
Or as John F. Kennedy so eloquently put in his inauguration speech, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Or region as in the case of Central Queensland. Is 1% improvement doable?
