Cam Houser is coming to Rockhampton. Cam Who you might be thinking. Cam is the CEO of the world’s leading 3 Day Startup (3DS). For a locality that wants to be a region of innovation this should be front page news.
At a recent meeting in Rockhampton with the Chief Operating Officer for the Office of Queensland Chief Entrepreneur an invited delegation stressed the need of greater awareness and education about entrepreneurship and engaging interest in more start-ups in Central Queensland.
As a community we arguably don’t appreciate the necessity. Growing automation and high energy costs will see more major industries go off-shore, smaller businesses struggle and fewer jobs available. Increased government spending (and debt) can’t be the only solution, it eventually becomes unsustainable.
Entrepreneurship has to be encouraged, nurtured, and developed.
The local media needs to do more than merely report on different activities involving the start-up eco-system in CQ.
Local media needs to use its power to drive a pro entrepreneurship agenda, or at least foster informed discussion.
The CQ community needs to be aware and educated that without people willing to have a go in business our economy risks further stagnation.
Parents/carers particularly need to understand why it will be better to encourage their children to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset than wait for a ‘safe’ job. Entrepreneurship may imply failing, or failing fast, but the important learning point is to fail cheaply and build the resilience through experience to bounce back and start again stronger from the experience.
This is part of what 3DS is all about; getting high school and university students together to activate their entrepreneurial potential in a boot camp style and work with others to produce a socially or commercially acceptable venture.
With parental encouragement the 3DS experience is more than exciting challenge, it’s a platform from which all start-up’s are built on.
Which is why the CQU is looking to live stream the 3 day event so parents and local media can keep up with the gain in knowledge the students will be exposed to and better understand and convey the critical importance of activating entrepreneurial potential in our region’s youth.
3DS is on June 9-11. Interested year 11 & 12 students are receiving details through their schools to be involved.
