Tim Glasby, one of tonight’s new Queensland State of Origin recruits, in a way pretty much reflects his rugby league playing home town of Rockhampton. Not the biggest player, not over hyped, a willing, reliable player that more than pulls his weight. Then when Queensland gets a kick in the guts, as Aurizon just did to Rockhampton, the media spotlight turns to him and the critics come out.
How Tim responds to the spotlight and his critics tonight I suspect should be the way Rockhampton responds to its latest spotlighted adversity. Tackle hard, run hard, not give up, let actions do the talking. At 28 Tim is a poster boy for persistence and not giving up on his dream (to play for Queensland), Rockhampton needs to keep doing likewise.
The Aurizon decision could discourage Rockhampton businesses expansion plans or even just hanging in-there plans. Many of Rockhampton’s small businesses are the result of their founder’s dream. Be it to be their own boss or build a product/provide a service different and better than others. Their dream is what gets them out of bed, put in 65 plus hour working weeks, take hits and dust themselves off to start again. It also what leads to more diversity and employment be it direct or indirect from the money they spend in turning their dream into a reality.
Rockhampton needs more dreamers like Tim Glasby to step up and have the spotlight on them. Rockhampton Regional Council is providing an opportunity for business dreamers to not only dream global but go global. Startup Stars is a 6-month intensive mentorship program valued at $15000 with Business in Bare Feet’s Mark Phillips. You don’t necessarily need to be a start-up, you could have a long running business with dreams of expanding internationally. The dreamers of up to 6 innovative concepts will receive coaching in rapid business growth techniques. It’s about making the whole dream a reality. Not just getting started but making it big. But you need to have taken the steps, like Tim has done to get inside ANZ Stadium tonight, show you’ve put in the preparation, got the dedication and willing to put your hand up to grind away. Similarly, there are no guarantees of success, but isn’t it better to strive trying to achieve the dream then forever sleeping on it or waiting for the right time. If you are interested in the Startup Stars program visit the Rockhampton Regional Council website. Applications close 9.00am this Monday.
