Did you know an emu never walks backwards! It can only move forward.

I became aware of this on Friday when the Welcome To Country was conducted for the Lunch and Learn event. The person doing the Welcome To Country in both Darambul and English believed the relevance of the emu being only able to move forward was strong symbolism for the objective of the event; get more people to move forward with their entrepreneurial ideas.

For the 120 odd people who attended hearing first hand from 3 start-up entrepreneurs was very insightful and no doubt encouraged some in the audience to keep moving forward with their ideas. Like an emu though entrepreneurial momentum can stop, to keep moving forward further encouragement is needed.

Having the Chief Entrepreneur of Queensland and 2 international start-up entrepreneurs plus a Victorian share their experiences isn’t always going to happen in Rockhampton to help people keep moving forward.

There are other events that can help people keep moving forward, that without the star power of Chief Entrepreneurs get very little publicity. One is a webinar this Friday by CQUniversity School of Business and Law Associate Lecturer Maree Franettovich on Business Model Building Blocks. Basically how you build a business model that best suits your budget and brain bank.  For more information and register visit http://www.impactinnovationgroup.com/events.

Next week there are 2 events. Thursday August 31st the Rockhampton Regional Library is hosting a live streaming event from the State Library of Queensland of ‘Game Changers’. The conversation is with former Blackwater resident, Wayne Denning, who left a successful career in the Federal Government to start Carbon Media. His objective is to give a positive voice to Indigenous Australians through the delivery of engaging content and compelling story telling. Skills that are essential for all businesses, new or old, in today’s digital economy. The event starts 5.45pm.

9.00am Friday (September 1st)  is the Money Magnet Masterclass. Where you will learn proven strategies for attracting investment in your entrepreneurial ideas from public and private sources. This free event is being held at CQIRP Conference Centre, Ibis Avenue, North Rockhampton. For more information and register visit http://www.impactinnovationgroup.com/events.

If you do have entrepreneurial ideas there are avenues locally available to help you to move forward with them. Unfortunately they don’t always get well publicised outside the start-up eco-system.

Liking the Startup Capricorn Facebook page will keep you posted on many of the events. Becoming more active in the local start-up ecosystem will be of greater benefit. Collecting information first hand from people who have done it is invaluable in your start-up journey. As well as meeting others who are on the same journey. You don’t have to do the journey on your own. As the famous Australian bushman, Russel Coight, says, “emus tend to travel in pairs, or alone or in a mob” (but always forward), entrepreneurs on their journey will at different stages need to do likewise.
